Understanding Giftedness – Answers to the questions Parents Frequently Ask

The Columbus Group (1991) identified that the way we parent, teach and counsel a gifted child needs to be modified in order for them to develop optimally.  20 years down the track this is still true.Parents as advocates and counsellors of their gifted children need to understand the social and emotional needs as well as the intellectual needs that necessitate this modification.  This workshop will look at how we can identify giftedness in pre school and primary aged children and some important strategies to nurture these chldren's strengths. We will also consider why some gifted chidlren underachieve. The presentation will include practical ideas and opportunities for questions and discussions.

Friendship and Social Skills for Gifted Children

“The career of childhood is to develop social competence and friendships.” Lavoie (2006)

  • ·        interact with others more positively
  • ·        manage their emotions
  • ·        establish and maintain quality friendships.
  • ·        experience success at school
  • ·        increase their independence

This workshop will look at the social and emotional characteristics of gifted children and consider the impact precocity and asynchrony have on developing productive social skills and the establishment of quality friendships. Gifted Children with Sensory Sensitivities – Practical strategies that make a difference

Sensory sensitivity can impact on our everyday experiences and in some cases affect our learning, friendships and play activities.  This talk will explore ways to identify and understand some of the sensory experiences children have and discuss some simple strategies to reduce the negative impact these might have on day to day activities.

Gifted Students and Underachievement

Until recently there was little real understanding about the possibility that a child could be academically gifted and yet not be performing successfully at school.  This underachievement can occur for a variety of reasons. This seminar will explore ways to address underachievement including that it means to be a twice exceptional student and the challenges faced by these students.

Nutirtion Talk  - Healthy Brain, Healthy Body  14th September,2010 7 - 8.30pm

Diet is a powerful tool. The choices we make about what to eat and what to feed our children have
significant impact not just on their health but on their learning and behaviour as well.
The brain is affected by the biochemistry generated in the body which is why  allergies and nutritional deficiencies can often bemisdiagnosed as behavioural and/or learning disorders.  Families today also need to be aware of how the overuse of additives in our food supply has had an important part to play in the rise of childhood disorders of the body and mind.
